GMRS

GMRS License

The GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) license from the FCC is an easy way to get into communications.

The gateway to radios for many of us was a pair of walkie-talkies as a kid. Those walkie-talkies used FRS (Family Mobile Radio) frequencies of which there are 22. Those old walkie-talkies didn't get very far, but gave us great childhood memories.

When you step into GMRS radios, they operate on the same 22 frequencies a FRS radios do. However, the offer server benefits.

  • More Power - More power equals more range and clearer audio quality. Some channels even offer up to 50 watts which is considerable in the world of radios. In comparison most FRS radios operate at 1-2 watts.
  • Repeater Frequencies - GMRS adds 8 additional repeater frequencies.
  • Removable Antennas - This additions is very helpful. Combined with the previous two benefits this creates a powerful mobile or base station radio that can cover considerable distances.
No test is needed to get a GMRS license (unlike an Amateur Radio license).
